Entering the U.S.

SLO Airport

When to Enter

New Scholars

J-1 visa scholars and their J-2 dependents entering the USA for the first time may enter the USA up to 30 days prior to the start date on the DS-2019.

Plan to arrive in time to apply for the Social Security Card (if you are being paid) and to begin your program of activity at Cal Poly.
Please notify us if you will need to arrive after your program start date. A revised document may be required so you will not have problems entering the U.S. late.

Returning Scholars

Scholars may depart the U.S. with prior authorization from the International Center for short trips no longer than 30 days.
