Instructions:

  1. Verify that your passport is valid at least six (6) months past your arrival date.

  2. Review the DS-2019 form issued by the International Center for accuracy. If there are any errors, notify the International Center immediately. Do not pay the SEVIS fee if there is an error on your form.

  3. If you are coming for an internship, review your DS-7002 Training/Internship Placement Plan for accuracy, sign it, and keep it with your DS-2019.

  4. Pay the I-901 SEVIS fee. Your SEVIS ID is on the top of your DS-2019 and begins with N00 and your Program Number is P-1-04964.

  5. Apply for a visa at a United States Embassy or Consulate in your home country. See this information on Eligibility and Fees.

Special instructions for Canadian citizens: A J-1 visa is not required. Just pay the I-901 SEVIS fee, then bring your passport, I-901 receipt, DS-2019 (and DS-7002 if applicable), and proof of funds with you to the U.S. port of entry.

  6. Fill out the DS-160 Visa Application form.

Apply for your J-1 or visa at the United States Embassy or Consulate in your home country and refer to their website for specific application submission instructions.

Review instructions for applying for a J-1 visa including links to the DS-160 application form and any applicable fees.

Follow this Step-by-Step Guide to the DS-160 Visa Application in Homebase.

Be sure to list all social media handles on your DS-160 including your Facebook URL if you have one. Failure to do so may result in a delay or denial of your visa application. New applicants who refuse to set their social media accounts to “public” and allow them to be reviewed may be rejected. Consular officers will be on the lookout for posts and messages that could be deemed hostile to the United States, its government, culture, institutions, or founding principles.

  7. Follow these tips to prepare for your J-1 visa appointment.

  8. Bring your documents with you to your visa appointment. You will be interviewed in English. Remain calm and answer questions honestly. Be prepared to talk about your program at Cal Poly and your plans when you return to your home country. The interview is normally brief and may be as short as five to ten minutes.

  9. Check to be sure that your DS-2019 is returned with your passport and that the information on your visa is correct.

  10. Carry your DS-2019 (and DS-7002 if applicable) with you on the plane.

  11. See instructions for Entering the U.S.
